यं पुंसां त्रिषु लोकेषु सर्वशूरम् अमंस्महि ॥
तस्मिन् विनिहते शूरे किं शेषं पर्युपास्महे ॥
यान् स्म तान् ग्लहते तातः शकुनिः कुरुसंसदि ॥
अक्षान् न ते ऽक्षा निशिता बाणास् ते शत्रुतापनाः ॥
त एते घ्नन्ति नस् तात विशिखा जयचोदिताः ॥
यांस् तदा ख्याप्यमानांस् त्वं विदुरेण न बुध्यसे ॥
तास् ता विलपतश् चापि विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥
धीरस्य वाचो नाश्रौषीः क्षेमाय वदतः शिवाः ॥

yān sma tān glahate tātaḥ śakuniḥ kurusaṃsadi ||

ta ete ghnanti nas tāta viśikhā jayacoditāḥ ||
yāṃs tadā khyāpyamānāṃs tvaṃ vidureṇa na budhyase ||
tās tā vilapataś cāpi vidurasya mahātmanaḥ ||
dhīrasya vāco nāśrauṣīḥ kṣemāya vadataḥ śivāḥ ||
"Whom among men in the three worlds we considered the greatest hero — now that that hero [Bhishma] is slain, on what else are we to rely? [The stakes] that your father Shakuni cast in the assembly of the Kurus were not dice, but sharp arrows, burning the enemies. Those very arrows, sent for the sake of victory, now slay us, dear one — [those] that were then declared to you by Vidura, but you did not understand. And the words of the great-souled, wise Vidura, lamenting, spoken for [your] welfare, benign, you did not heed."

Drona reveals the image: the dice that Shakuni cast were arrows, and now they strike down the Kauravas. It is telling that the evil sown in the gambling hall sprouts on the battlefield: injustice ripens in its own time. The verse teaches that a dishonest game, taken for a victory, was in truth a sowing of ruin; and one who did not heed the benign words of the wise man who warned him then now reaps the "arrows" that he himself cast as "dice."
