तद् इदं वर्तते घोरम् आगतं वैशसं महत् ॥
तस्यावमानाद् वाक्यस्य दुर्योधन कृते तव ॥
यच् च नः प्रेक्षमाणानां कृष्णाम् आनाययः सभाम् ॥
अनर्हतीं कुले जातां सर्वधर्मानुचारिणीम् ॥
तस्याधर्मस्य गान्धारे फलं प्राप्तम् इदं त्वया ॥
नो चेत् पापं परे लोके त्वम् अर्च्छेथास् ततो ऽधिकम् ॥
tad idaṃ vartate ghoram āgataṃ vaiśasaṃ mahat ||
tasyāvamānād vākyasya duryodhana kṛte tava ||
yac ca naḥ prekṣamāṇānāṃ kṛṣṇām ānāyayaḥ sabhām ||
anarhatīṃ kule jātāṃ sarvadharmānucāriṇīm ||
tasyādharmasya gāndhāre phalaṃ prāptam idaṃ tvayā ||
no cet pāpaṃ pare loke tvam arcchethās tato 'dhikam ||
"Thus terrible things are now unfolding — a great slaughter has come, from contempt for that word, Duryodhana, because of you. And for that, that before our very eyes you brought Krishna [Draupadi] into the assembly — undeserving of that, born in a [noble] family, who followed all dharma — for that unrighteousness, O son of Gandhari, this fruit has been obtained by you; and if not here, you would obtain an even greater sin in the other world."

Drona names the root directly: the outrage against Draupadi in the assembly is the injustice whose fruit is now being reaped. It is telling that he adds — if not here, the punishment in the other world would be still heavier. The verse teaches that violation of a defenseless, virtuous woman is a sin inevitably called to account; and one who allowed it before the eyes of all reaps its fruit either here, in ruin, or there, in a still harsher fate.
