उपारमस्व युद्धाय द्रोणाद् भरतसत्तम ॥
गृध्यते हि सदा द्रोणो ग्रहणे तव संयुगे ॥
नानुरूपम् अहं मन्ये युद्धम् अस्य त्वया सह ॥
यो ऽस्य सृष्टो विनाशाय स एनं श्वो हनिष्यति ॥
परिवर्ज्य गुरुं याहि यत्र राजा सुयोधनः ॥
भीमश् च रथशार्दूलो युध्यते कौरवैः सह ॥
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
मुहूर्तं चिन्तयित्वा तु ततो दारुणम् आहवम् ॥

gṛdhyate hi sadā droṇo grahaṇe tava saṃyuge ||
nānurūpam ahaṃ manye yuddham asya tvayā saha ||
yo 'sya sṛṣṭo vināśāya sa enaṃ śvo haniṣyati ||
parivarjya guruṃ yāhi yatra rājā suyodhanaḥ ||
bhīmaś ca rathaśārdūlo yudhyate kauravaiḥ saha ||
vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
muhūrtaṃ cintayitvā tu tato dāruṇam āhavam ||
"Give up the fight with Drona, O best of the Bharatas; for Drona ever longs to seize you in the fray. I do not deem his battle with you fitting: he who was created for his ruin will slay him tomorrow. Bypassing the teacher, go to where king Suyodhana is, and where Bhima, the tiger among charioteers, battles with the Kauravas." Having heard the word of Vasudeva, the king of righteousness, Yudhishthira, having reflected for a moment, turned then into the fierce fray.

Krishna turns Yudhishthira away from a duel with Drona: the king of righteousness is not the one fate has appointed to slay the teacher. It is significant that wisdom counsels avoiding this fight not out of fear, but out of a true recognition of one's place in the larger design: each has his own task, and Drona's death is destined for another. The verse teaches that valor is inseparable from discernment -- knowing where one's own battle lies and where it does not, and submitting impulse to higher understanding is greater than blind persistence.
