अनादृत्य बलं बाह्वोर् भीमसेनस्य माधव ॥
चित्रास्त्रतां च पार्थस्य विक्रमन्ते स्म कौरवाः ॥
एष द्रोणश् च कर्णश् च राजा चैव सुयोधनः ॥
निहत्य राक्षसं युद्धे हृष्टा नर्दन्ति संयुगे ॥
कथम् अस्मासु जीवत्सु त्वयि चैव जनार्दन ॥
हैडिम्बः प्राप्तवान् मृत्युं सूतपुत्रेण संगतः ॥
कदर्थीकृत्य नः सर्वान् पश्यतः सव्यसाचिनः ॥
निहतो राक्षसः कृष्ण भैमसेनिर् महाबलः ॥

citrāstratāṃ ca pārthasya vikramante sma kauravāḥ ||
eṣa droṇaś ca karṇaś ca rājā caiva suyodhanaḥ ||
nihatya rākṣasaṃ yuddhe hṛṣṭā nardanti saṃyuge ||
katham asmāsu jīvatsu tvayi caiva janārdana ||
haiḍimbaḥ prāptavān mṛtyuṃ sūtaputreṇa saṃgataḥ ||
kadarthīkṛtya naḥ sarvān paśyataḥ savyasācinaḥ ||
nihato rākṣasaḥ kṛṣṇa bhaimasenir mahābalaḥ ||
"Disregarding the strength of Bhimasena's arms, O Madhava, and the wondrous weaponry of Partha, the Kauravas display valor. Here are Drona and Karna, and King Suyodhana, having slain the rakshasa in battle, rejoicing, roar in the fray. How, while we are alive and while you too, O Janardana, [live], did the son of Hidimba meet death, having encountered the son of a suta? Having humiliated all of us, before the eyes of Savyasachin [Arjuna], the rakshasa is slain, O Krishna -- the son of Bhimasena, of great strength."

Yudhishthira is tormented not only by loss but by shame: his nephew died before everyone's eyes, while his defenders lived. It is telling that his grief is mixed with wounded honor -- "having humiliated all of us." The verse teaches that the death of one we might have saved wounds twice over -- with grief and with conscience; and the death of the faithful is felt hardest of all where the strength of protectors stood near, yet did not turn the blow aside.
