"When Abhimanyu had been slain by the evil-souled Dhartarashtras, Savyasachin [Arjuna], the great warrior, was not there in the battle, O Krishna. And all of us were held back by the evil-souled Saindhava [Jayadratha]; the cause of that deed was Drona, with his son. The means of slaying was pointed out to Karna by the teacher himself; and of him [Abhimanyu] who was fighting with the sword, [Karna] cut his sword in two. Of him who was in distress, Kritavarman, cruelly, suddenly slew the horses, and both flank charioteers."

Yudhishthira recalls the death of Abhimanyu -- a boy surrounded and slain by many in violation of dharma. It is telling that he calls it "cruel," nṛśaṃsavat: a dishonorable killing of the defenseless. The verse teaches that trampling the rules of war against the weaker is a particular vileness; and the memory of such a deed does not fade -- it cries out for reckoning, for injustice against the young and the isolated cries louder than any other.
