समाने वृक्षे पुरुषः निमग्नः अनीशया शोचति मुह्यमानः ।
जुष्टं यदा पश्यति अन्यम् ईशम् अस्य महिमानम् इति वीतशोकः ॥

On the same tree a man, sunk [in the fruits], grieves in bewilderment — from his own powerlessness. But when he sees the Other — the beloved Lord — and His greatness, his grief departs.

The fate of the eating bird — and its cure. samāne vṛkṣe puruṣo nimagnaḥ — "on the same tree a man, sunk": ni-magna — drowned in the foliage of experience, in the pecking of fruits; anīśayā śocati muhyamānaḥ — "grieves, bewildered, from non-lordship": anīśā — "not being lord": helplessness, want of mastery over himself and circumstances: the creature's grief comes of trying to be a master when it is not one; it tries on the role of the Lord — and buckles under the burden of a rank not its own.
juṣṭaṁ yadā paśyaty anyam īśam — "but when he sees the Other — the Lord, [worthy] of love": juṣṭa — "beloved, one whom it is a joy to serve" (from √juṣ — "to love, to delight in"); asya mahimānam iti — "and His greatness" — vīta-śokaḥ — "his grief departs".
The remedy is named with the utmost precision: not "understand the impersonality of the world", not even "renounce desires" — see the Other. The grief was born of an imagined loneliness on the tree; it dies of a meeting of eyes. And the decisive word is anyam, "the Other": salvation comes not out of the bird's own depth but from the second Bird: to know oneself is not enough; what heals is knowing Him. The Śvetāśvatara will repeat these two verses word for word (4.6–7): a double testimony to the most ancient of tidings: you are not alone on the tree, and He who is beside you is great and loving.
