By breath the gods breathe, and men, and cattle: breath is the life of beings, and therefore it is called the whole of life. The full span of life is attained by those who worship breath as Brahman: for breath is the life of beings, and therefore it is called the whole of life. He is the embodied self of the former. But within this [self] made of breath is another self, consisting of mind: by that the former is filled. He too has the form of a man: after the man-shape of the one, man-shaped is the other. The Yajus is his head, the Ṛc his right side, the Sāman his left side, instruction his trunk, the Atharvāṅgirases his lower part, the support. Of that there is also a verse.

The second sheath is the prāṇa. prāṇaṁ devā anu prāṇanti — "after the breath the gods too breathe": life is the one currency of every storey of the universe, from gods to cattle; sarvāyuṣam — "the whole of life": the fullness of every creature's term is measured by breath. And again the honest wage of a level: he who worships the prāṇa as Brahman receives āyus — a full lifetime.
tasyaiṣa eva śārīra ātmā yaḥ pūrvasya — the formula that will now recur at every seam: "he is the embodied self of the former": breath is the soul of the body, the body the garment of breath: each inner layer is the "dweller" of the outer; the ladder of sheaths is a ladder of dwellers, in which each outer one proves to be a house for the more inward.
Within the prāṇa is the manomaya, the self made of mind; and its anatomy is unexpected: head the Yajus, sides the Ṛc and the Sāman, trunk ādeśa (instruction), support the Atharvāṅgirases: the mind is described as woven of the Vedas! Not the physiology of thought but its nourishment: the mind consists of what fills it; the mind of a Vedic man is built of sacred speech as the body is of food. A question to every mind for all time: of what are your head, your sides, your support composed?
