annam na nindyāt tat vratam prāṇaḥ vai annam śarīram annādam prāṇe śarīram pratiṣṭhitam śarīre prāṇaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ tat etat annam anne pratiṣṭhitam saḥ yaḥ etat annam anne pratiṣṭhitam veda pratitiṣṭhati annavān annādaḥ bhavati mahān bhavati prajayā paśubhiḥ brahmavarcasena mahān kīrtyā
Let him not revile food — that is the vow. Breath is food, the body is the eater of food: in breath the body is established, in the body breath is established. Thus food is established in food. He who knows this food established in food is established: he becomes possessed of food, an eater of food; he becomes great in offspring, in cattle, in the radiance of Brahman, great in fame.

After the summit come the vows: and the first of them is annaṁ na nindyāt tad vratam — "let him not revile food: that is the vow". He who has found Bliss binds himself first of all not to despise matter! The order is deeply considered: while Bhṛgu was ascending, food was "the lowest step"; from the summit another thing is visible: the step belongs to the same temple as the altar. To revile food, the body, substance, is the mark of one who has not arrived: true height does not spit downward, for there is no "down" any more — everything is His.
And then a contemplation of mutuality: prāṇo vā annam śarīram annādam — "breath is food, the body is the eater": but also the reverse: in breath the body is established, in the body breath: annam anne pratiṣṭhitam — "food is established in food": each is both the food and the eater of the other: life is a mutual feeding, a circular sacrifice in which there are no one-sided consumers.
He who sees thus "is established": for one who honours food, food does not fail; the formula of abundance (offspring, cattle, radiance, fame) will now be repeated after every vow like a refrain: reverence for matter is no hindrance to the spirit but its fruit-bearing bed.
