The first fruit of Bhṛgu's tapas: annaṁ brahmeti vyajānāt — "he discerned: food is Brahman". And the test by his father's formula fits: out of food they are born, by food they live, into food they pass — all correct! Matter, nourishment, is indeed the origin, the support and the grave of all bodies: Bhṛgu discovered what every honest science discovers first — and it is not a mistake: it is the first storey of the truth (the Taittirīya has already sung a hymn to food in the second vallī — and will enjoin at the end that it not be reviled).
But the son feels the incompleteness — and in that feeling is the whole engine of the tale: he goes again to his father with the same question: adhīhi bhagavo brahma. And Varuṇa says neither "right" nor "wrong" — he says: tapasā brahma vijijñāsasva tapo brahma — "by austerity discern Brahman: austerity is Brahman": the method itself (tapas) is declared a face of what is sought: burn on — the heat is the road.
Such is the spring of the whole vallī: the answer is true — and small; the teacher does not refute but sends deeper. So real knowledge grows: not through "you were wrong" but through "go further": every step is true as a step and false as a ceiling. Bhṛgu has yet to climb four times more.
