Here a foreshadowing shows itself: the rite will not be completed ‘because of a brahmin.’ This is the shadow of the Astika yet to come, who will indeed halt the sacrifice. It is notable that scripture announces the outcome in advance: the very excess of the design carries within it the seed of its own limit. A higher providence is at work here: even clothed in the sanctity of a rite, vengeance against an entire race will not reach completion — for dharma sets a limit to the slaughter of the innocent. The king, having heard the prophecy, tries to guard himself: ‘let no unknown person enter’ — a vain attempt of human caution to ward off what is foreordained. Thus scripture contrasts human effort with the will from above: just as Parikshit vainly guarded himself against Takshaka, so too will Janamejaya vainly guard himself against the brahmin-deliverer. For what is foretold for the good cannot be averted by any guard.
