Shaunaka said: «Who, then, were the priests, the greatest sages, at the serpent sacrifice of the wise king Janamejaya, descendant of Pandu? And who became the members of the assembly at that most terrible serpent sacrifice, which brought excessive terror to the serpents and bred despair among the nagas? Tell it all in full detail, O worthy one, for we ought to know those versed in the rite of the serpent sacrifice, O son of a suta.» Suta said: «Well then, I shall tell you the names of those sages who were priests and members of the assembly at that king's rite. There the hotr was the brahmin Chandabhargava, born in the line of Chyavana, renowned, foremost among the knowers of the Vedas. The udgatr was the aged, learned brahmin Jaimini of the line of Kutsa; the brahma-priest was Sharngarava, and the adhvaryu was Bodhapingala. A member of the assembly, too, was Vyasa, together with his son, pupils, and companions; and Uddalaka, Shamathaka, and Shvetaketu, fifth; Asita Devala, and Narada, and Parvata as well, Atreya, the brahmin Kundajathara, and Kutighata as well; Vatsya, the aged Shrutashravas, devoted to austerity and the study of the Vedas; Kahoda, Devasharman, Maudgalya, Shamasaubhara. These and many other brahmins, firm in their vows, became members of the assembly there at the sacrifice of the descendant of Parikshit.»
