Here appear the summit of the Pandavas' glory and — for the first time — Krishna as their divine ally. Telling is the wondrous comparison: five brothers and the sun — "as six suns"; thus righteous rule illumines the earth, like a luminary. Here is the ideal of a dharmic kingdom: the conquest of the quarters is accomplished not for the sake of greed, but by heroes "who honor dharma, are devoted to truth, and are patient" — power in the hands of the righteous is a blessing for the world. But the heart of this passage is the union of Arjuna and Krishna. Marriage to Subhadra, Krishna's sister, seals the Pandavas' kinship with the Lord Himself; and the burning of Khandava reveals their invincibility: "with Keshava beside him, nothing is too great a burden — as for Vishnu." Here for the first time the epic's central secret sounds clearly: the strength of the Pandavas lies not in themselves, but in Krishna, Vishnu Himself, who has become their friend and charioteer. Thus the scripture points out: where Krishna is, there is victory (yatra kṛṣṇas tato jayaḥ); and all the greatness of the Pandavas is a reflection of His presence.
