Here the picture of the hunt reaches its grim extreme: beasts perish from weapons, from thirst, from exhaustion; some are devoured; and the elephants themselves, wounded, trample people. Here is the bitter truth of violence: it does not remain one-sided -- the wounded beasts trample people in turn; violence breeds violence, and blood is spilled on both sides. Significant is the word "the forest shone terribly" (vyarocat): the text does not hide the fearsome "beauty" of the slaughter, yet it does not celebrate it as a good either -- rather, it shows its dual nature. For a heart in search of dharma, this scene is an image of a world burdened with violence, the very world for whose purification the gods descend. It is significant, too, that this picture of blood is immediately followed (in the next chapter) by the stillness of Kanva's hermitage, where the animals are tame and know no enmity: the text deliberately juxtaposes these extremes, so that the reader's heart, having had its fill of the image of violence, might thirst for the peace and compassion toward which the whole epic leads.
