Here Shakuntala, though insulted, answers not with abuse but with wise sayings (subhashita) — and shows righteous anger clothed in instruction. Notable is the famous comparison: “you see the faults of others as small as a mustard seed, but your own, as large as a bilva fruit, you do not see” — here is the perennial lesson about blindness to one’s own sins and keenness of sight for those of others, the root of self-conceit and condemnation. Notable too are the images of the pig and the swan: the fool, like a pig, picks out the bad from what he hears; the wise man, like a swan (hamsa), separates milk (the good) from water (the bad). This is the classic image of viveka (discernment), the wise person’s ability to extract the essence. This applies also to the hearing of scripture: one should listen with the discernment of the swan, taking in what is good. And bitter and pointed is the final word: “there is nothing more laughable than when an evildoer calls a good person an evildoer” — a direct rebuke to the king, who has slandered an innocent woman. Thus Shakuntala confronts her offender not with vengeance but with truth, rising above him not through force but through wisdom and dignity.
