Here begins the tale of Kacha and Devayani — the prehistory of the line. It is telling wherein lies the root of the asuras' advantage: their priest Shukra possesses the science of revival (sanjivani-vidya), and so the demons who fall in battle rise again, while the gods who fall do not return. Here is an image of the advantage that hidden knowledge gives; and the gods' plan is not to seize this knowledge by force but to obtain it, through Kacha, by winning it over. It is telling that the path chosen for this is not war but service and charm: Kacha must "please through character, courtesy, and gentleness" — that is, conquer not by weapons but by virtue and devoted service (guru-shushrusha). Thus the tradition teaches that knowledge is gained not by violence but by humility before the teacher and service to him. Note too the moral ambiguity in the gods' plan: they send Kacha as a kind of spy, to obtain knowledge from a rival; yet Kacha will carry this out through honest service rather than deceit, and so ennobles the task laid upon him. Thus the story is set in motion, full of lessons about a disciple's devotion, about love, and about the teacher's law.
