Here Devayani complains to her father — and Shukra reveals his true dignity. Telling, first, is Shukra's word on karma: 'all people bring upon themselves grief and joy by their own faults; surely you have some fault, for which this is the atonement.' Here is a deep law: suffering is not accidental but the fruit of one's own deeds (karma); the wise seek the cause first in themselves. Though here Devayani is the one wronged, Shukra reminds her of self-examination — a wholesome habit in the face of misfortune. Telling too is Shukra's answer to Sharmishtha's taunt: 'you are the daughter not of one who praises, but of one who is praised'; that is, Shukra is no 'beggar priest' but an independent sage, whose 'might is the inconceivable, non-dual Brahman.' Herein lies the height of brahminical dignity: the true brahmin serves not out of need but out of dharma; his real strength lies not in the king's patronage but in his participation in Brahman — spiritual power. Thus the text refutes Sharmishtha's arrogance: great is not the one who gives (the king), but the one who partakes of spirit. Note also Devayani's humility before her father ('I wished to appease Sharmishtha') — yet her pride is already wounded, and, as the next chapter will show, she will demand redress.
