Here begins the conversation between Yayati and Indra — the occasion for a moral teaching. It is notable that Yayati, dwelling among the gods, wanders 'from the world of the gods to the world of Brahma': an image of the righteous soul ascending through the higher worlds. Yet — as the sequel will show — this very conversation (in which Yayati will come to boast of his own merits) leads to his fall. Here lies a subtle warning: even in heaven, amid bliss, the temptation of pride lies in wait. Notable, too, is the division of the kingdom: Puru (the youngest, but the obedient one) receives 'the middle of the earth, between the Ganga and the Yamuna' (the heartland of Bharata), while the elder sons become 'lords of the borderlands.' Thus obedience is rewarded with the heart of the kingdom; and — providentially — this very 'middle land' (Kurukshetra, between the rivers) will become the site of the great battle of the Bharatas. Indra's question ('what did you say to Puru?') introduces the king's instruction to his son — one of the epic's finest moral teachings, which now follows.
