Here Yayati, though fallen, displays a remarkable equanimity -- and teaches of the power of destiny (dishta) and of balance of spirit. His calm amid misfortune is telling: “there is no sorrow in my mind”; instead of complaint, he accepts what has happened as the will of the Ordainer (Dhatri). Here is a lofty teaching close to the Gita: the wise keep their balance (samatva) in happiness and sorrow, “neither tormented nor exultant”; for results, pleasant and bitter alike, come by a higher dispensation, not by one's own strength alone. Also telling is Yayati's penitent insight: he acknowledges the cause of his fall (“for scorning all beings”) and blames no one but himself. Thus the proud man, cast down, has gained humility and wisdom: he who once “saw no equal to himself” now accepts the will of God and teaches equanimity. Herein lies the fruit of suffering: the fall has purified Yayati of pride and brought him to insight. And reflection on impermanence (all things “return to their own nature,” vanishing) is the foundation of detachment: one who has known the transience of happiness and sorrow clings to neither. Thus scripture teaches: acceptance of the higher will and balance of spirit are wisdom that is born, often, of bitter experience.
