Here Shantanu is born, and his name is explained. The etymology is striking: to the tranquil one (shanta) was born a continuation (santana) of the line, and so he is Shantanu. The name is bound to its substance: Shantanu is the fruit of his aged parents' austerity, born by providence, for he is the fallen Mahabhisha; his birth is a mercy earned by that austerity. Notable too is Pratipa's instruction: do not question that maiden, and do not reproach her, whatever she may do. Here is obedience to providence, for Pratipa is preparing the fulfillment of the Ganga's pact with the Vasus, and, more deeply, an image of trust: sometimes dharma requires not questioning but accepting with trust what unfolds according to a higher design. Yet a shadow is already visible: the command 'do not ask' foreshadows that Shantanu, by breaking it, will lose the Ganga; already in this instruction lies the seed of the coming separation. And the image of Shantanu the hunter, constantly roaming the forest, again -- as with Dushyanta and Pandu -- links hunting to fateful encounters: it is precisely on the hunt that he will meet the Ganga. Thus the scripture prepares the meeting from which Bhishma will be born.
