वैशंपायन उवाच
पाण्डोर् अवभृथं कृत्वा देवकल्पा महर्षयः ॥
ततो मन्त्रम् अकुर्वन्त ते समेत्य तपस्विनः ॥
हित्वा राज्यं च राष्ट्रं च स महात्मा महातपाः ॥
अस्मिन् स्थाने तपस् तप्तुं तापसाञ् शरणं गतः ॥
स जातमात्रान् पुत्रांश् च दारांश् च भवताम् इह ॥
प्रदायोपनिधिं राजा पाण्डुः स्वर्गम् इतो गतः ॥
ते परस्परम् आमन्त्र्य सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥
पाण्डोः पुत्रान् पुरस्कृत्य नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥
उदारमनसः सिद्धा गमने चक्रिरे मनः ॥
भीष्माय पाण्डवान् दातुं धृतराष्ट्राय चैव हि ॥
तस्मिन्न् एव क्षणे सर्वे तान् आदाय प्रतस्थिरे ॥
पाण्डोर् दारांश् च पुत्रांश् च शरीरं चैव तापसाः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
pāṇḍor avabhṛthaṃ kṛtvā devakalpā maharṣayaḥ ||
tato mantram akurvanta te sametya tapasvinaḥ ||
hitvā rājyaṃ ca rāṣṭraṃ ca sa mahātmā mahātapāḥ ||
asmin sthāne tapas taptuṃ tāpasāñ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ ||
sa jātamātrān putrāṃś ca dārāṃś ca bhavatām iha ||
pradāyopanidhiṃ rājā pāṇḍuḥ svargam ito gataḥ ||
te parasparam āmantrya sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ ||
pāṇḍoḥ putrān puraskṛtya nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam ||
udāramanasaḥ siddhā gamane cakrire manaḥ ||
bhīṣmāya pāṇḍavān dātuṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrāya caiva hi ||
tasminn eva kṣaṇe sarve tān ādāya pratasthire ||
pāṇḍor dārāṃś ca putrāṃś ca śarīraṃ caiva tāpasāḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Having performed the funeral ablution for Pandu, the godlike great sages gathered and began to deliberate: 'Having abandoned kingdom and realm, that great ascetic came here to the ascetics, seeking refuge, in order to perform austerity; and he, entrusting to you here, as a pledge, his newborn sons and wives, King Pandu has departed to heaven.' They, having consulted together, devoted to the welfare of all beings, placing the sons of Pandu foremost, resolved to go to the city of Hastinapura, to give the Pandavas over to Bhishma and Dhritarashtra; and at that very moment all the ascetics, taking Pandu's wives, sons, and his body, set out on the road."

Here the sages show fidelity to what was entrusted to them. Telling is the word "pledge" (upanidhi): Pandu entrusted them with his wives and children as a treasure for safekeeping, and they consider it their duty not to abandon the orphans but to deliver them to their rightful guardians. Here lies the sanctity of trust and the compassion of the righteous: saints withdrawn from the world do not turn away from helpless orphans, but, "devoted to the welfare of all beings," take upon themselves the labor of settling their fate. Telling too is that they carry Pandu's very body — so that the funeral rites might be performed with dignity, within the family. Thus scripture shows that true holiness is not indifferent but actively merciful, and that what is entrusted to the righteous is safely kept.
