मुहूर्तोदित आदित्ये सर्वे धर्मपुरस्कृताः ॥
सदारास् तापसान् द्रष्टुं निर्ययुः पुरवासिनः ॥
स्त्रीसंघाः क्षत्रसंघाश् च यानसंघान् समास्थिताः ॥
ब्राह्मणैः सह निर्जग्मुर् ब्राह्मणानां च योषितः ॥
तथा विट्शूद्रसंघानां महान् व्यतिकरो ऽभवत् ॥
न कश् चिद् अकरोद् ईर्ष्याम् अभवन् धर्मबुद्धयः ॥
muhūrtodita āditye sarve dharmapuraskṛtāḥ ||
sadārās tāpasān draṣṭuṃ niryayuḥ puravāsinaḥ ||
strīsaṃghāḥ kṣatrasaṃghāś ca yānasaṃghān samāsthitāḥ ||
brāhmaṇaiḥ saha nirjagmur brāhmaṇānāṃ ca yoṣitaḥ ||
tathā viṭśūdrasaṃghānāṃ mahān vyatikaro 'bhavat ||
na kaś cid akarod īrṣyām abhavan dharmabuddhayaḥ ||
"When the sun had risen for a muhurta, all the townspeople, placing dharma foremost, went out with their wives to see the ascetics. Hosts of women and hosts of kshatriyas, mounted on many carriages, went out together with the brahmins, and the wives of the brahmins; likewise a great throng of hosts of vaishyas and shudras arose; and no one displayed envy — all were of righteous mind."

Here the piety of the people of Hastinapura shows itself. Telling is that all the classes — brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, with their wives — go out at once to see the saints, "placing dharma foremost." Here is an image of a society that honors the holy: where the people rush toward the darshan (sight) of ascetics, piety is diffused everywhere. Especially telling is that "no one displayed envy": amid the great crowd and press, people did not jostle in pride, but were "of righteous mind." This is a small yet important trait of a golden age of dharma: reverence for the holy quiets discord and envy, and the whole people becomes, for a time, one in veneration. Thus scripture shows the good soil onto which the orphaned Pandavas step.
