"Thus Bhishma, son of Shantanu, Somadatta, Bahlika, and the royal sage whose eye is wisdom (Dhritarashtra), and Vidura-kshattar himself, and the gracious Satyavati, and the glorious Kausalya, and Gandhari, surrounded by the royal wives, went out; and the heirs of Dhritarashtra, with Duryodhana at their head, adorned with many-colored ornaments, a hundred in number, went out."

Here the whole house of Kuru goes out to meet the saints and the orphans. Telling is that Dhritarashtra is called "the king whose eye is wisdom" (prajna-cakshus): blind in body, he sees by intellect — a reverent naming that reminds us even one deprived of sight partakes of wisdom. Telling is the juxtaposition in this list of the Pandavas, about to be received, and the hundred Kauravas led by Duryodhana, who have come out to meet them: the two future warring camps still meet here in peace, as kin. Here is a bitter contrast with what is to come: now Duryodhana and his brothers go out to greet their orphaned cousins, whom afterward he will pursue his whole life. Thus scripture captures the last moment of family unity, before the orphanhood of the Pandavas brings them into a house where enmity will grow.
