ततः परं तु नैषादिर् अङ्गुलीभिर् व्यकर्षत ॥
न तथा स तु शीघ्रो ऽभूद् यथा पूर्वं नराधिप ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनः प्रीतमना बभूव विगतज्वरः ॥
द्रोणश् च सत्यवाग् आसीन् नान्यो ऽभ्यभवद् अर्जुनम् ॥

अनुवाद
"After that the son of the Nishada shot with his remaining fingers, but he was no longer as swift as before, O lord of men. Then Arjuna became glad at heart, freed from anguish; and Drona remained true to his word: no one surpassed Arjuna."

Here are the fruits of a cruel price — and their bitter taste. It is telling that the goal is reached at the cost of injustice: Arjuna is at peace, Drona's word is kept, but at what price — the maiming of an innocent man, whose only fault was his excellence and lowly birth. A warning shows itself here: a supremacy purchased through another's misfortune is tainted, and Arjuna's joy is not wholly pure joy. It is telling that the scripture does not exult but merely notes without partiality: the son of the Nishada has grown slower, Arjuna is content. A subtle law of karma also appears here: the injustice done for the sake of supremacy will return — both Drona and Arjuna have their own sorrows awaiting them in the great war. Thus the scripture, without embellishment, leaves the reader to judge for himself, and in that judgment the devoted Ekalavya stands above those who wronged him.
