प्राणाधिकं भीमसेनं कृतविद्यं धनंजयम् ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रा दुरात्मानो नामृष्यन्त नराधिप ॥
तांस् तु सर्वान् समानीय सर्वविद्यासु निष्ठितान् ॥
द्रोणः प्रहरणज्ञाने जिज्ञासुः पुरुषर्षभ ॥
कृत्रिमं भासम् आरोप्य वृक्षाग्रे शिल्पिभिः कृतम् ॥
अविज्ञातं कुमाराणां लक्ष्यभूतम् उपादिशत् ॥
द्रोण उवाच
शीघ्रं भवन्तः सर्वे वै धनूंष्य् आदाय सत्वराः ॥
भासम् एतं समुद्दिश्य तिष्ठन्तां संहितेषवः ॥
मद्वाक्यसमकालं च शिरो ऽस्य विनिपात्यताम् ॥
एकैकशो नियोक्ष्यामि तथा कुरुत पुत्रकाः ॥

śīghraṃ bhavantaḥ sarve vai dhanūṃṣy ādāya satvarāḥ ||
bhāsam etaṃ samuddiśya tiṣṭhantāṃ saṃhiteṣavaḥ ||
madvākyasamakālaṃ ca śiro 'sya vinipātyatām ||
ekaikaśo niyokṣyāmi tathā kuruta putrakāḥ ||
"The evil-minded sons of Dhritarashtra could not bear Bhimasena, [strong] beyond life, and the skillful Dhananjaya, O lord of men. Having gathered all the disciples, established in every science, Drona, wishing to test them in the art of striking, set up on the top of a tree an artificial bird made by craftsmen, unnoticed by the princes, and pointed it out as the target." Drona said: "Quickly, all of you, taking up your bows in haste, having aimed at this bird, stand with arrows nocked; and at the moment of my word let its head be struck down; I shall appoint each one in turn — do so accordingly, my sons."

Here begins the famous test of marksmanship — a lesson in concentration. It is telling that Drona tests not strength but attention: the target is small and hard to discern, and only one utterly focused can strike it. In this is seen a parable of spiritual one-pointedness (ekagrata): as the archer must see only the target, so the yogi and the devotee must see only the Lord, having turned away from everything else. It is also telling that this reminder of the Kauravas' malice toward the Pandavas comes just here: against this backdrop the test will reveal the difference of hearts. Thus the scripture turns a martial exercise into a teaching on concentration, preparing to reveal Arjuna's glorious answer.
