"Seeing the sons of Pandu filled with virtues, the citizens, having gathered, said at the crossroads and in the assemblies: 'Dhritarashtra, whose eye is wisdom, did not obtain the kingdom before because of his blindness; how then shall he become king? And Bhishma, faithful to his great vow, having once renounced the kingdom, will now never accept it. Therefore let us now anoint the eldest Pandava -- young, yet mature in character, truthful, compassionate; for he, knowing dharma, will honor both Bhishma and Dhritarashtra together with his sons, granting them manifold comforts.'"

Here the voice of the people is heard -- and in it, the voice of dharma. It is telling that the citizens are drawn to Yudhishthira not for strength but for virtue: "truthful, compassionate, mature in character." This shows that righteousness of itself draws love and trust: the people turn unerringly to the one in whom they see dharma. It is telling, too, that the citizens foresee that Yudhishthira, once enthroned, will honor Dhritarashtra and his sons: a righteous ruler does not take revenge or slight anyone, but cares for all. Notice how different the spirit of the two sides is: the people want Yudhishthira for the common good, while Duryodhana will crave power for himself. So scripture, through the voice of the people, proclaims to whom the throne rightly belongs by dharma -- making the guilt of those who oppose that truth all the heavier.
