इत्य् अर्थम् इष्यते ऽपत्यं तारयिष्यति माम् इति ॥
तस्मिन्न् उपस्थिते काले तरतं प्लववन् मया ॥
इह वा तारयेद् दुर्गाद् उत वा प्रेत्य तारयेत् ॥
सर्वथा तारयेत् पुत्रः पुत्र इत्य् उच्यते बुधैः ॥
आकाङ्क्षन्ते च दौहित्रान् अपि नित्यं पितामहाः ॥
तान् स्वयं वै परित्रास्ये रक्षन्ती जीवितं पितुः ॥
ity artham iṣyate 'patyaṃ tārayiṣyati mām iti ||
tasminn upasthite kāle tarataṃ plavavan mayā ||
iha vā tārayed durgād uta vā pretya tārayet ||
sarvathā tārayet putraḥ putra ity ucyate budhaiḥ ||
ākāṅkṣante ca dauhitrān api nityaṃ pitāmahāḥ ||
tān svayaṃ vai paritrāsye rakṣantī jīvitaṃ pituḥ ||
"For this reason offspring is desired: 'it will save me'; now that the time has come, cross over by means of me, as though by a raft. Whether it saves from calamity here, or saves after death, in every way the child saves; that is why the wise call it 'putra' [the savior]. And grandfathers always long for the benefit of a daughter's sons; them too I myself will save, while protecting my father's life."

Here the daughter claims the dignity of a 'savior,' usually ascribed to the son. Striking is the interpretation of the word 'putra' — 'one who saves [from hell, from bondage]'; and the maiden proves that a daughter, too, can save the family and the ancestors, since through her sons (dauhitra) the grandfathers hope for benefit. The capacity to serve and to save, as revealed here, is not bound to sex: worth is measured by devotion, not by birth as male or female. It is notable that, in protecting her father's life, she thereby saves the whole lineage and the ancestors as well. Thus the verse elevates the daughter to the savior of the family; and in her resolve shines the truth that the path of service is open to every loving heart.
