तद् अहं प्रज्ञया स्मृत्वा बलं भीमस्य पाण्डव ॥

"Recalling in my wisdom both Bhima's strength and the duty of repayment to the vipra, I made this decision. Not out of greed, not out of ignorance, and not out of delusion has this been resolved, but deliberately, for the sake of dharma. And two purposes will be accomplished at once, Yudhishthira: the repayment for our lodging, and the great dharma thereby performed."

Here Kunti presents a model of a deliberate rather than a passionate decision. Notable is her denial of the three roots of a bad choice — "not out of greed, ignorance, delusion": she judges with a sober mind, testing her intent by the purity of its motives. Such is the mark of righteous action: it is free from self-interest and error, and grounded in dharma. Notable too is that a single deed bears two fruits — gratitude and dharma: a good deed rarely serves only one purpose. Thus the scripture shows that good done with a clear mind and for the sake of dharma is doubly fruitful; and Kunti's decision is a lesson in discerning, not blind, virtue.
