नाश्रोत्रियः श्रोत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा ॥
नाराजा पार्थिवस्यापि सखिपूर्वं किम् इष्यते ॥

Here power turns into pride, trampling friendship. It is telling how much Drupada has changed: having ascended the throne, he renounces his childhood friend, declaring friendship between unequals impossible. There is a grain of truth in that closeness requires harmony; but Drupada turns this into haughty contempt, humiliating the one who has come to him. Here we see how wealth and rank corrupt the heart: the one who has risen forgets those from before and measures people not by worth but by station. Thus the scripture shows the corrupting power of pride; and Drupada's cold words, wounding Drona, sow the seed of enmity from which a whole chain of calamities will grow.
