ब्राह्मण उवाच
स विनिश्चित्य मनसा पाञ्चाल्यं प्रति बुद्धिमान् ॥
जगाम कुरुमुख्यानां नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥
तस्मै पौत्रान् समादाय वसूनि विविधानि च ॥
प्राप्ताय प्रददौ भीष्मः शिष्यान् द्रोणाय धीमते ॥
द्रोणः शिष्यांस् ततः सर्वान् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
समानीय तदा विद्वान् द्रुपदस्यासुखाय वै ॥
आचार्यवेतनं किं चिद् धृदि संपरिवर्तते ॥
कृतास्त्रैस् तत् प्रदेयं स्यात् तद् ऋतं वदतानघाः ॥

tasmai pautrān samādāya vasūni vividhāni ca ||
prāptāya pradadau bhīṣmaḥ śiṣyān droṇāya dhīmate ||
droṇaḥ śiṣyāṃs tataḥ sarvān idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||
samānīya tadā vidvān drupadasyāsukhāya vai ||
ācāryavetanaṃ kiṃ cid dhṛdi saṃparivartate ||
kṛtāstrais tat pradeyaṃ syāt tad ṛtaṃ vadatānaghāḥ ||
The brahmin said: 'He, wise, having resolved in his mind to repay the Panchala prince, went to the city of the chief Kurus, Hastinapura. To him, upon his arrival, Bhishma, gathering his grandsons and various riches, gave them as pupils to the wise Drona. Drona then, gathering all the pupils, spoke this word, the learned one, for Drupada's misfortune: "A certain fee for the teacher turns over in my heart; you who are accomplished in weapons must give it to me; promise that truly, O sinless ones."'

Here an insulted teacher nurses revenge even within the act of teaching itself. It is telling that Drona takes on pupils 'for Drupada's misfortune': even the sacred work of teaching is clouded by a harbored grievance. Here we see how a grievance, not resolved by forgiveness, poisons even what is good: one should teach for the pupil's benefit, not for one's own revenge. Telling too is that Drona binds the pupils to a vow in advance, without revealing his purpose: revenge seeks roundabout ways. Thus the scripture shows how corrosive an unavenged grievance is, penetrating even into lofty service; and from Drona's wounded pride the wheel of enmity begins to turn, one in which both Drupada and the Draupadi yet to come will be caught.
