तथेत्य् उक्त्वा तु तं याजो याज्यार्थम् उपकल्पयत् ॥
गुर्वर्थ इति चाकामम् उपयाजम् अचोदयत् ॥
याजो द्रोणविनाशाय प्रतिजज्ञे तथा च सः ॥
ततस् तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य उपयाजो महातपाः ॥
आचख्यौ कर्म वैतानं तदा पुत्रफलाय वै ॥
स च पुत्रो महावीर्यो महातेजा महाबलः ॥
इष्यते यद्विधो राजन् भविता ते तथाविधः ॥
tathety uktvā tu taṃ yājo yājyārtham upakalpayat ||
gurvartha iti cākāmam upayājam acodayat ||
yājo droṇavināśāya pratijajñe tathā ca saḥ ||
tatas tasya narendrasya upayājo mahātapāḥ ||
ācakhyau karma vaitānaṃ tadā putraphalāya vai ||
sa ca putro mahāvīryo mahātejā mahābalaḥ ||
iṣyate yadvidho rājan bhavitā te tathāvidhaḥ ||
"Yaja, having said 'so be it,' prepared all for the sacrifice, and 'for the guru's sake' compelled the unwilling Upayaja; and both bound themselves by vow to Drona's destruction. Then Upayaja, the great ascetic, disclosed to that lord of men the Vaitana rite for the sake of a son as fruit: 'And that son, of great valor, great splendor, great strength — of whatever kind is desired, O king, will be born to you of that same kind.'"

Here the unwilling ascetic yields after all — for the sake of his brother-teacher. It is telling that Upayaja is moved not by greed but "for the guru's sake": reverence for his elder brother and teacher outweighs his reluctance. Here the force of duty toward the guru shows itself: even to a task the heart does not favor, men submit out of respect for their teacher. Telling too is the promise: the son will be "of whatever kind is desired" — the power of the rite will fulfill the design exactly. Thus the scripture shows how potent a sacrifice is in skilled hands; and the two brothers, having bound themselves by vow, turn the rite's power toward Drona's destruction, as the king had asked.
