स एक एकाम् आसाद्य कन्यां ताम् अरिमर्दनः ॥
तस्थौ नृपतिशार्दूलः पश्यन्न् अविचलेक्षणः ॥
स हि तां तर्कयाम् आस रूपतो नृपतिः श्रियम् ॥
पुनः संतर्कयाम् आस रवेर् भ्रष्टाम् इव प्रभाम् ॥
गिरिप्रस्थे तु सा यस्मिन् स्थिता स्वसितलोचना ॥
स सवृक्षक्षुपलतो हिरण्मय इवाभवत् ॥
अवमेने च तां दृष्ट्वा सर्वप्राणभृतां वपुः ॥
अवाप्तं चात्मनो मेने स राजा चक्षुषः फलम् ॥
sa eka ekām āsādya kanyāṃ tām arimardanaḥ ||
tasthau nṛpatiśārdūlaḥ paśyann avicalekṣaṇaḥ ||
sa hi tāṃ tarkayām āsa rūpato nṛpatiḥ śriyam ||
punaḥ saṃtarkayām āsa raver bhraṣṭām iva prabhām ||
giriprasthe tu sā yasmin sthitā svasitalocanā ||
sa savṛkṣakṣupalato hiraṇmaya ivābhavat ||
avamene ca tāṃ dṛṣṭvā sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṃ vapuḥ ||
avāptaṃ cātmano mene sa rājā cakṣuṣaḥ phalam ||
«Approaching alone that solitary maiden, the crusher of foes, the tiger among kings, stood gazing with an unmoving eye. For he took her, by her beauty, for Shri, and again took her for the sun's radiance as though fallen from heaven. The mountain slope on which she, the dark-eyed one, stood — with its trees, shrubs, and vines — became as though made of gold. And having seen her, he scorned the form of all other living beings, and that king deemed the fruit of his eyes attained».

Here the maiden's beauty reveals itself as a radiance that transforms everything around it. It is telling that in her presence the very slope with its trees seems turned to gold: wondrous beauty, as it were, pours its light upon its surroundings. Telling too is the king's word about "the fruit of the eyes": he judged that his eyes had not looked in vain, having beheld such beauty. Here glimmers a reflection of the truth that beholding the beautiful is a reward to the eye; its highest measure being the beholding of the Lord. Thus the scripture shows the power of beauty, which transforms both the seer and the seen; and the king, overwhelmed by it, forgets all else.
