«Whatever that lord of the earth had seen from birth onward, he could find no beauty equal to hers. His mind and eyes bound by snares woven of her virtues, he did not move from that spot and was aware of nothing. "Surely, for the sake of this wide-eyed one, the Creator took the world together with its gods, asuras, and men, churned it together, and fashioned and revealed this form" — so mused King Samvarana then, overwhelmed by the wealth of her beauty, at that maiden unmatched in the world».

Here beauty binds with "snares woven of virtues." The very phrase is telling: the king's mind and eyes are entangled in the bonds of her perfections — the captivating binds tighter than any rope. Here is seen the power of attraction that fetters the soul: where earthly beauty enslaves so, all the more irresistibly does the Lord's beauty draw — beauty that is one, that does not enslave but liberates. Telling too is the self-forgetting: the king is aware of nothing — such is the stupor of the captivated. Thus the scripture shows the power of beauty over the heart; and in Samvarana's captivation glimmers the image of a soul seized by the object of its love.
