वैशंपायन उवाच
ततो ऽर्जुनो ऽस्त्रम् आग्नेयं प्रददौ तद् यथाविधि ॥
गन्धर्वाय तदा प्रीतो वचनं चेदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
त्वय्य् एव तावत् तिष्ठन्तु हया गन्धर्वसत्तम ॥
कर्मकाले ग्रहीष्यामि स्वस्ति ते ऽस्त्व् इति चाब्रवीत् ॥

अनुवाद
Vaishampayana said: "Then Arjuna, gladdened, gave the gandharva the weapon of Agni according to custom, and spoke this word: 'Let the horses remain with you for now, O best of gandharvas; at the time of need I will take them; good fortune to you.'"

Here a friendly agreement is honestly kept. It is telling that Arjuna hands over the promised weapon while leaving the horses with his friend for the time being: between friends, faithfulness to one's word is joined with trust. Here is the purity of mutual giving -- no bargaining, no hidden motive, only mutual honesty and affection. Thus scripture shows a model of friendly exchange; and Arjuna, true to the agreement, seals his bond with the gandharva through deed.
