व्यास उवाच
अस्मिन् धर्मे विप्रलम्भे लोकवेदविरोधके ॥
यस्य यस्य मतं यद् यच् छ्रोतुम् इच्छामि तस्य तत् ॥

Here the sage, before instructing, listens to everyone. It is telling that Vyasa, himself all-knowing, still asks for each one's opinion: a true teacher does not overpower but lets others speak, so as to lead them from doubt to clarity. Here is the meekness of genuine wisdom, one that does not flaunt its knowledge. Thus scripture shows the wholesome image of guidance, and the counsel opens with the free word of each.
