कुन्त्य् उवाच
एवम् एतद् यथाहायं धर्मचारी युधिष्ठिरः ॥
अनृतान् मे भयं तीव्रं मुच्येयम् अनृतात् कथम् ॥

Here the mother fears not disgrace but untruth. It is telling that Kunti's anxiety is not about people's talk but about whether her unwitting word might turn out false: for a righteous soul, falsehood is more fearsome than reproach. In this lies the primacy of truthfulness, placed above one's own peace of mind. Thus scripture shows Kunti's conscientiousness, and her fear of untruth moves the sage to grant his decision.
