Dhrishtadyumna said: 'How would the elder brother, being of good conduct, O bull among the twice-born, approach the wife of the younger? But owing to the subtlety of dharma, we do not know its course at all; whether it is "unrighteousness" or "righteousness" — such a decision cannot be made by ones such as we, O brahmin. Therefore I do not resolve that Krishna should become the wife of the five, in any way.'

Here the brother honestly acknowledges the limit of his own understanding. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna both hesitates and dares not judge: it is nobler to admit ignorance than to hastily condemn or approve what is subtle. In this lies humility, which does not pass off its own opinion as dharma: where reason falls short, a voice from above is needed. Thus scripture shows honest hesitation, and the shared perplexity heightens the need for Vyasa's word.
