वैशंपायन उवाच
तौ रथाभ्यां नरव्याघ्रौ दावस्योभयतः स्थितौ ॥
दिक्षु सर्वासु भूतानां चक्राते कदनं महत् ॥

Here the grim severity of the deed shows itself. It is telling that the scripture does not conceal it: this was "a great slaughter of creatures" -- the death of countless beings. Even what is undertaken by design of the gods can be dreadful and grievous for the creature; scripture does not soften the harsh truth. Thus scripture reveals the weight of what was done, and to a compassionate heart it is sorrowful to behold the death of the living.
