देवनागरी
ततो जग्मुर् महात्मानः सर्व एव दिवौकसः ॥
शरणं देवराजानं सहस्राक्षं पुरंदरम् ॥
देवा ऊचुः
किं न्व् इमे मानवाः सर्वे दह्यन्ते कृष्णवर्त्मना ॥
कच्चिन् न संक्षयः प्राप्तो लोकानाम् अमरेश्वर ॥

अनुवाद
The gods said: "Then went the great-souled ones, all the dwellers of heaven, for refuge to the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed Purandara; the gods said: 'What -- are all these creatures being burned by the fire? Has not the destruction of the worlds come, O lord of the immortals?'"

Here even the gods suppose that the end of the world is at hand. It is telling that the heaven-dwellers dread "the destruction of the worlds": so fearsome is the fire that it seems like the universal dissolution itself. And the gods turn to the highest among them in fear. Thus scripture reveals the consternation of heaven, and Indra will now be moved to defend his forest.
