वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्माद् देशाद् अतिक्रान्ते ज्वलने जरिता ततः ॥
जगाम पुत्रकान् एव त्वरिता पुत्रगृद्धिनी ॥
सा तान् कुशलिनः सर्वान् निर्मुक्ताञ् जातवेदसः ॥
रोरूयमाणा कृपणा सुतान् दृष्टवती वने ॥
अश्रद्धेयतमं तेषां दर्शनं सा पुनः पुनः ॥
एकैकशश् च तान् पुत्रान् क्रोशमानान्वपद्यत ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tasmād deśād atikrānte jvalane jaritā tataḥ ||
jagāma putrakān eva tvaritā putragṛddhinī ||
sā tān kuśalinaḥ sarvān nirmuktāñ jātavedasaḥ ||
rorūyamāṇā kṛpaṇā sutān dṛṣṭavatī vane ||
aśraddheyatamaṃ teṣāṃ darśanaṃ sā punaḥ punaḥ ||
ekaikaśaś ca tān putrān krośamānānvapadyata ||
Vaishampayana said: “When the fire had passed beyond that place, Jarita, hungering for her sons, hastened to her little ones; she saw all of them, unharmed, escaped from the fire, weeping, wretched, there in the forest; their sight, again and again, seemed to her almost unbelievable; and one by one she embraced those sons, weeping.”

Here a mother's grief turns into the joy of reunion. It is telling that Jarita can hardly believe her sons are saved and embraces them one by one: for a mother, the return of children from death is an unspeakable wonder. In this is the fruit of trust in Agni: those entrusted to him are saved. So the scripture reveals a joyful reunion; and here Mandapala arrives.
