यदा प्रसन्नो भगवान् महादेवो भविष्यति ॥
तुभ्यं तदा प्रदास्यामि पाण्डवास्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥
अहम् एव च तं कालं वेत्स्यामि कुरुनन्दन ॥
तपसा महता चापि दास्यामि तव तान्य् अहम् ॥
आग्नेयानि च सर्वाणि वायव्यानि तथैव च ॥
मदीयानि च सर्वाणि ग्रहीष्यसि धनंजय ॥
yadā prasanno bhagavān mahādevo bhaviṣyati ||
tubhyaṃ tadā pradāsyāmi pāṇḍavāstrāṇi sarvaśaḥ ||
aham eva ca taṃ kālaṃ vetsyāmi kurunandana ||
tapasā mahatā cāpi dāsyāmi tava tāny aham ||
āgneyāni ca sarvāṇi vāyavyāni tathaiva ca ||
madīyāni ca sarvāṇi grahīṣyasi dhanaṃjaya ||
Indra said: "When the blessed Mahadeva shall be gracious, then I shall give you, O Pandava, all the weapons; and I myself shall know that time, O joy of the Kurus, and by your great austerity too I shall give them to you; and all the fiery weapons, and the aerial ones likewise, and all my own, you shall receive, O Dhananjaya."

Here the supreme gift is made contingent on Mahadeva's grace and on austerity. It is significant that Indra does not hand over the weapons at once, but awaits Shiva's favour and Arjuna's tapas: the greatest things are attained only through austerity and grace from above. Thus scripture shows that heavenly power is entrusted to the worthy in its own time, not before. Thus scripture foretells Arjuna's coming austerity; and then Krishna chooses his own boon.
