वासुदेवो ऽपि जग्राह प्रीतिं पार्थेन शाश्वतीम् ॥
ददौ च तस्मै देवेन्द्रस् तं वरं प्रीतिमांस् तदा ॥
दत्त्वा ताभ्यां वरं प्रीतः सह देवैर् मरुत्पतिः ॥
हुताशनम् अनुज्ञाप्य जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः ॥

अनुवाद
"And Vasudeva too chose eternal friendship with Partha; and the lord of the gods gave him that boon then, rejoicing; having given the boon to the two of them, pleased, together with the gods, the lord of the Maruts, having taken leave of Agni, went again to the third heaven."

Here Krishna chooses neither weapons nor power, but eternal friendship with Arjuna. It is significant that the Lord, in whose hand all things rest, asks only for an unbreakable bond of love with His devotee: the supreme gift is not might, but the eternal tie of Nara and Narayana. In this lies the heart of the whole tradition: the indissoluble love of the Lord and His devotee. Thus scripture shows the most precious of gifts; and Indra returns to heaven.
