निग्राह्य-लक्षणम् प्राप्तःnigrāhya-lakṣaṇam prāptaḥhas attained the mark of [one deserving] restraint
धर्म-अर्थ-नय-लक्षणैःdharma-artha-naya-lakṣaṇaiḥby the [violated] marks of dharma, artha and policy,
बार्हद्रथः जरासंधःbārhadrathaḥ jarāsaṃdhaḥBarhadratha Jarasandha, —
तत् विद्धि भरत-ऋषभtat viddhi bharata-ṛṣabhaknow this, o bull of the Bharatas;
न च एनम् अनुरुध्यन्तेna ca enam anurudhyanteand do not submit to him
कुलानि एक-शतम् नृपाःkulāni eka-śatam nṛpāḥa hundred and one lineages of kings,
तस्मात् एतत् बलात् एवtasmāt etat balāt evatherefore by strength alone

Here is named the root of the legitimacy of a tyrant's overthrow: he has trampled dharma, artha and naya, and is therefore "deserving of restraint." It is significant that power resting on force alone, against the unwilling will of peoples, thereby exposes itself as unrighteous. Thus the scripture reveals that tyranny, which tramples dharma, brings punishment upon itself; and further — of his insatiability.
