ततः काश्मीरकान् वीरान् क्षत्रियान् क्षत्रियर्षभः ॥
व्यजयल् लोहितं चैव मण्डलैर् दशभिः सह ॥
ततस् त्रिगर्तान् कौन्तेयो दार्वान् कोकनदाश् च ये ॥
क्षत्रिया बहवो राजन्न् उपावर्तन्त सर्वशः ॥
अभिसारीं ततो रम्यां विजिग्ये कुरुनन्दनः ॥
उरशावासिनं चैव रोचमानं रणे ऽजयत् ॥
tataḥ kāśmīrakān vīrān kṣatriyān kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ||
vyajayal lohitaṃ caiva maṇḍalair daśabhiḥ saha ||
tatas trigartān kaunteyo dārvān kokanadāś ca ye ||
kṣatriyā bahavo rājann upāvartanta sarvaśaḥ ||
abhisārīṃ tato ramyāṃ vijigye kurunandanaḥ ||
uraśāvāsinaṃ caiva rocamānaṃ raṇe 'jayat ||
Then the bull among kshatriyas conquered the Kashmiri heroes, the kshatriyas, and Lohita with its ten districts. Then the son of Kunti [conquered] the Trigartas, the Darvas, and the Kokanadas — many kshatriyas, O king, submitted from every side. Then the descendant of Kuru conquered the beautiful Abhisari and overcame in battle Rochamana, the inhabitant of Urasha.

Again and again the same thing recurs: kings 'submit' (upāvartanta) of their own accord, without matters coming to slaughter. It is significant that the wider the fame of the unconquerable, the less need there is for bloodshed: report of valor conquers before the arrows do. Thus the highest victory reveals itself — the one won without battle, by the sole recognition of strength and righteousness. The verse teaches that true might bends others willingly; and that conqueror is great before whom others yield not from terror of ruin, but from a reasoned recognition of the unconquerable.
