ततः परमविक्रान्तो बाह्लीकान् कुरुनन्दनः ॥
महता परिमर्देन वशे चक्रे दुरासदान् ॥
tataḥ siṃhapuraṃ ramyaṃ citrāyudhasurakṣitam ||
prāmathad balam āsthāya pākaśāsanir āhave ||
tataḥ suhmāṃś ca colāṃś ca kirīṭī pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ ||
sahitaḥ sarvasainyena prāmathat kurunandanaḥ ||
tataḥ paramavikrānto bāhlīkān kurunandanaḥ ||
mahatā parimardena vaśe cakre durāsadān ||
Then the son of Pakashasana, relying on his army, crushed in battle the beautiful Simhapura, well guarded by Chitrayudha. Then Kiriti, bull among the Pandavas, the descendant of Kuru, crushed the Suhmas and the Cholas with his whole army. Then the surpassingly valiant descendant of Kuru, with a great onslaught, subjected the inaccessible Bahlikas to his power.

Wherever stubborn resistance is met — a 'well-guarded' stronghold, the 'inaccessible' Bahlikas — there Arjuna does not retreat but applies a 'great onslaught.' It is significant that gentleness toward the submissive does not mean weakness before the obstinate: righteous strength measures itself against its opponent. Whoever yields is spared; whoever persists in pride behind walls is subdued. The verse teaches that mercy and firmness do not contradict one another but are the two hands of a single justice, each appearing in its own turn.
