त्वादृशो धर्मयुक्तो हि कुर्वाणः प्रियकाम्यया ॥
भवत्य् अभ्यधिकं भीष्मो लोकेष्व् अवमतः सताम् ॥
कथं ह्य् अराजा दाशार्हो मध्ये सर्वमहीक्षिताम् ॥
अर्हणाम् अर्हति तथा यथा युष्माभिर् अर्चितः ॥
अथ वा मन्यसे कृष्णं स्थविरं भरतर्षभ ॥
वसुदेवे स्थिते वृद्धे कथम् अर्हति तत्सुतः ॥
tvādṛśo dharmayukto hi kurvāṇaḥ priyakāmyayā ||
bhavaty abhyadhikaṃ bhīṣmo lokeṣv avamataḥ satām ||
kathaṃ hy arājā dāśārho madhye sarvamahīkṣitām ||
arhaṇām arhati tathā yathā yuṣmābhir arcitaḥ ||
atha vā manyase kṛṣṇaṃ sthaviraṃ bharatarṣabha ||
vasudeve sthite vṛddhe katham arhati tatsutaḥ ||
"For one like you, [falsely] devoted to dharma, acting out of a desire to please, becomes, O Bhishma, exceedingly despised among the good in [these] worlds. How, then, is the non-king Dasharha worthy, amid all the lords of the earth, of the honor with which you have honored him? And if you consider Krishna the elder, O bull of the Bharatas — then, when his elder father Vasudeva is here, how is his son worthy [of it]?"

Shishupala measures Krishna by the worldly yardstick of "king or not king," "elder or younger": since he is not crowned, since his father is alive, he is therefore unworthy. It is telling how helpless this worldly measure is before the One who is beyond every category. The Lord is honored not as one king among others and not by seniority of years, but as the Source of kingship itself and of time itself. The verse teaches that one who measures the divine by earthly categories inevitably misses the mark: Krishna is honored not as fitted into some rank, but as the One from whom all ranks proceed. Whoever seeks God among categories will not find Him in any one of them — for He is their Creator, not their member.
