ऐडांश् चैलान् वार्षदंशाञ् जातरूपपरिष्कृतान् ॥
प्रावाराजिनमुख्यांश् च काम्बोजः प्रददौ वसु ॥
अश्वांस् तित्तिरिकल्माषांस् त्रिशतं शुकनासिकान् ॥
उष्ट्रवामीस् त्रिशतं च पुष्टाः पीलुशमीङ्गुदैः ॥
गोवासना ब्राह्मणाश् च दासमीयाश् च सर्वशः ॥
प्रीत्यर्थं ते महाभागा धर्मराज्ञो महात्मनः ॥
त्रिखर्वं बलिम् आदाय द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति वारिताः ॥
कमण्डलून् उपादाय जातरूपमयाञ् शुभान् ॥
एवं बलिं प्रदायाथ प्रवेशं लेभिरे ततः ॥
aiḍāṃś cailān vārṣadaṃśāñ jātarūpapariṣkṛtān ||
prāvārājinamukhyāṃś ca kāmbojaḥ pradadau vasu ||
aśvāṃs tittirikalmāṣāṃs triśataṃ śukanāsikān ||
uṣṭravāmīs triśataṃ ca puṣṭāḥ pīluśamīṅgudaiḥ ||
govāsanā brāhmaṇāś ca dāsamīyāś ca sarvaśaḥ ||
prītyarthaṃ te mahābhāgā dharmarājño mahātmanaḥ ||
trikharvaṃ balim ādāya dvāri tiṣṭhanti vāritāḥ ||
kamaṇḍalūn upādāya jātarūpamayāñ śubhān ||
evaṃ baliṃ pradāyātha praveśaṃ lebhire tataḥ ||
“Sheepskins, garments, furs of varshadamsha trimmed with gold, the finest cloaks and hides — these Kamboja gave as wealth. And horses of tittiri-kalmasha colour, parrot-nosed — three hundred, and three hundred she-camels, fattened on the fruits of pilu, shami, and ingudi. And the Govasana brahmins, and all the Dasamiyas, for the pleasure of the great-souled Dharmaraja, bearing beautiful golden kamandalus and thus offering tribute, gained entry thereafter.”

Even the brahmins bring tribute ‘for the pleasure of Dharmaraja’ — not out of fear, but out of love. It is telling that those who come to Yudhishthira are drawn by affection: his righteousness itself gathers gifts, as a flower gathers bees. The verse teaches that tribute to a righteous king is not a forced levy but a joyful offering; where power rests on dharma, tribute becomes an expression of reverence rather than a burden. But Duryodhana's envious eye sees, even in this willing love of the peoples, nothing but a heap of another's goods. The very same thing is, for one, evidence of righteousness, and for another, mere plunder to be reckoned; everything depends on the heart of the beholder.
