अजाविकं गोहिरण्यं खरोष्ट्रं फलजं मधु ॥
कम्बलान् विविधांश् चैव द्वारि तिष्ठन्ति वारिताः ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपः शूरो म्लेच्छानाम् अधिपो बली ॥
यनवैः सहितो राजा भगदत्तो महारथः ॥
आजानेयान् हयाञ् शीघ्रान् आदायानिलरंहसः ॥
बलिं च कृत्स्नम् आदाय द्वारि तिष्ठति वारितः ॥
अश्मसारमयं भाण्डं शुद्धदन्तत्सरून् असीन् ॥
प्राग्ज्योतिषो ऽथ तद् दत्त्वा भगदत्तो ऽव्रजत् तदा ॥

prāgjyotiṣo 'tha tad dattvā bhagadatto 'vrajat tadā ||
“— goats and sheep, cows and gold, donkeys and camels, fruit-honey and various woollen fabrics — stand at the gate, until admitted. The lord of Pragjyotisha, the hero, the mighty lord of the mlecchas, King Bhagadatta, the great chariot-warrior, together with the Yavanas, having taken swift thoroughbred horses equal to the wind, and all the tribute, stands at the gate, until admitted. Having offered vessels of tempered steel and swords with hilts of pure bone, Pragjyotisha (Bhagadatta) then withdrew.”

Even Bhagadatta, the mighty lord of the mlecchas, ‘stands at the gate, until admitted.’ This humility of the strongest is telling: mighty kings wait their turn like ordinary tributaries. The verse teaches that before a righteous center even the great bow to a common order: strength grants no right to break the proper sequence. Where power rests on dharma, even the lords of nations enter not by force but by turn, offering what is due. And one who, like Bhagadatta, having paid tribute, withdraws in peace, shows the nobility of one who acknowledges something higher; while the envious man, tallying these gifts, fails to understand that what he beholds is not the triumph of wealth but of an order acknowledged by all.
