धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
वाक्यं न मे रोचते यत् त्वयोक्तं; यत् ते प्रियं तत् क्रियतां नरेन्द्र ॥
पश्चात् तप्स्यसे तद् उपाक्रम्य वाक्यं; न हीदृशं भावि वचो हि धर्म्यम् ॥
दृष्टं ह्य् एतद् विदुरेणैवम् एव; सर्वं पूर्वं बुद्धिविद्यानुगेन ॥
तद् एवैतद् अवशस्याभ्युपैति; महद् भयं क्षत्रियबीजघाति ॥

vākyaṃ na me rocate yat tvayoktaṃ; yat te priyaṃ tat kriyatāṃ narendra ||
paścāt tapsyase tad upākramya vākyaṃ; na hīdṛśaṃ bhāvi vaco hi dharmyam ||
dṛṣṭaṃ hy etad vidureṇaivam eva; sarvaṃ pūrvaṃ buddhividyānugena ||
tad evaitad avaśasyābhyupaiti; mahad bhayaṃ kṣatriyabījaghāti ||
[Vidura:] "I do not like the word you have spoken; let what is dear to you be done, O lord of men — but you will regret it afterward, having acted upon that word, for such a word will not be in accord with dharma." — [Vaishampayana:] For all this Vidura, follower of wisdom and knowledge, had likewise foreseen before; and that very thing now comes to pass, when all are helpless — the great terror that destroys the seed of the kshatriyas.

Vidura utters a bitter prophecy: "you will regret it afterward." It is telling how powerless truth is before a will that has already decided: the truthful man sees the outcome, gives warning — and cannot stop it. The verse shows the fate of a lover of truth at a court ruled by bias: he is listened to but not heard, honored but not followed. And the words about "the terror that destroys the seed of the kshatriyas" are a foreshadowing of Kurukshetra: from this game the annihilation of the clan will grow. Dharma speaks beforehand through Vidura's mouth so that afterward no one may say "we did not know"; but foreknowledge does not abolish the freedom to fall. Whoever, having heard the truth, acts according to passion, himself lays the foundation for a repentance that will have no end.
