तथाचरितम् आर्येण त्वयास्मिन् सत्समागमे ॥
दुर्योधनस्य पारुष्यं तत् तात हृदि मा कृथाः ॥

उपस्थितं वृद्धम् अन्धं पितरं पश्य भारत ॥
प्रेक्षापूर्वं मया द्यूतम् इदम् आसीद् उपेक्षितम् ॥
मित्राणि द्रष्टुकामेन पुत्राणां च बलाबलम् ॥

[Dhritarashtra:] 'Thus you conducted yourself, noble one, in this assembly of the virtuous; do not hold in your heart, my son, the cruelty of Duryodhana. Look upon your mother Gandhari and upon me, longing for your virtues, upon your old blind father standing before you, O Bharata. With deliberation this game was permitted by me -- by me, who wished to see [my] allies and [learn] the strength and weakness of my sons.'

Fatherly words are mixed with cunning self-justification: Dhritarashtra asks that evil not be remembered, and at the same time dresses up his permitting the game as an act of wisdom -- 'I wished, after all, to see the strength and weakness of my sons.' Thus attachment to a son clothes complicity in the garments of calculation; but no plausible-sounding intention justifies the lawlessness that was allowed. It is telling that he appeals to pity -- 'an old blind father' -- seeking in compassion what he did not earn through justice. The verse teaches that love blinded by partiality invents excuses instead of repentance; that a plea for forgiveness not joined to condemnation of what was done remains incomplete; and that the truly noble one here is not the self-justifying elder but the son who is told not to remember evil -- for he already does not remember it.
