वैशंपायन उवाच
इत्य् उक्तो भरतश्रेष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
कृत्वार्यसमयं सर्वं प्रतस्थे भ्रातृभिः सह ॥
ते रथान् मेघसंकाशान् आस्थाय सह कृष्णया ॥
प्रययुर् हृष्टमनस इन्द्रप्रस्थं पुरोत्तमम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
ity ukto bharataśreṣṭho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
kṛtvāryasamayaṃ sarvaṃ pratasthe bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
te rathān meghasaṃkāśān āsthāya saha kṛṣṇayā ||
prayayur hṛṣṭamanasa indraprasthaṃ purottamam ||
Thus instructed, Yudhishthira, the best of the Bharatas, the Dharmaraja, having concluded the whole noble agreement, set out together with his brothers. Mounting chariots resembling clouds, they, together with Krishna [Draupadi], rode with joyful hearts to Indraprastha, the finest of cities.

The chapter of disgrace ends with visible deliverance: restored in dignity, with their freedom returned, the Pandavas ride home rejoicing. But behind this bright resolution a shadow lurks -- for Duryodhana's envy is not sated but wounded, and the crack in the house that calls forth calamity has not been mended. The joyful heart of the Pandavas is pure, for they do not remember evil; but the peace they rely on rests not on their own freedom from malice but on another's good will, which does not exist. The verse teaches that forgiven evil, not corrected at its very source, returns; that the joy of the righteous, not shared by the offender, is only a lull; and that the true end of injustice comes not through the mercy of the one who permitted it, but through the repentance of the guilty -- which was absent here.
